Meet The Team: David Hammond - Owner
I started Sunshine Gardens in 1992, originally as a small part-time job. Over the years, it has grown into the thriving business it is today, with a fantastic team of 15 staff and an ever-growing number of loyal customers.
Experience & Background
With more than 34 years in the gardening industry, I’ve done just about everything there is to do – from marketing and quoting jobs to working on the tools, carrying out garden maintenance and landscaping. I’ve also answered thousands of gardening questions from customers along the way.
While I don’t have formal horticultural certificates, my decades of hands-on experience have taught me more than any classroom could. Passing that knowledge on to my team is something I genuinely enjoy, and it’s a big part of how we maintain consistent standards across every job we take on.
A Passion for the Job
Gardening can certainly be tough on the body, but I genuinely believe there’s no better way to earn a living than working outdoors. Yes, winter mornings can be cold, but hard work soon warms you up.
One of the most satisfying parts of the job is transforming an overgrown or neglected garden in a single day and standing back at the end to admire the results. Seeing the reaction from our clients when they step outside and see their garden looking great again never gets old. Over the past three decades, I’ve heard the phrase “I could never do all this in a month of Sundays” more times than I can count.
Local Roots & Community
Sunshine Gardens is based in Baldock, which has been my hometown for over 60 years. It’s a great feeling to walk through town and bump into people I’ve known for years, and being part of the local community has always been important to me.
Baldock is also perfectly located near the A1(M), making it easy for us to serve nearby towns such as Hitchin, Biggleswade, Stevenage and St Albans. We’re also lucky to be surrounded by so many beautiful villages – and I’d be surprised if there’s a town or village around Baldock that hasn’t had a Sunshine Gardens tidy-up or maintenance visit at some point over the years.
