Fencing

You only put a new fence up once if done properly, so let’s do it right. Leave the timber posts to rot with the others – having concrete slotted posts put in, with a six inch concrete gravel board at the bottom, will enhance any garden and will ensure no more rotten posts or panels. Slide in a new standard larchlap panel or, even better, the stronger and better looking closed board panel, and you will be the envy of all your neighbours.

Fence styles

There are many choices of fence styles. Remember all panels are 6ft wide but come in varying heights from 6ft to 3ft in 6” increments.

Larch Lap

The basic panel you see in DIY stores. Basic and cheaper but will not last the test of time in heavy winds.

Closed Board

A great fence for the boundary of your garden when it backs onto a road or walkway. This type of fencing comes in 8ft bays instead of the regular 6ft width which means less posts are required.

Aris Rail Fencing

A great fence for the boundary of your garden when it backs onto a road or walkway. This type of fencing comes in 8ft bays instead of the regular 6ft width which means less posts are required.

European Style

These come in various shapes which includes curved tops and/or trellis. Great look but comes with a higher cost

Which posts should I have?

You have 2 choices when it comes to fence posts. The traditional timber posts come in 3” or 4” widths and both look fine, but they will rot (in the end). These used be to be the cheaper product to concrete posts but, with the cost of timber products shooting skywards since COVID, there is hardly a difference between the two. Slotted concrete posts are the premium product to go to when installing a fence. Some say the look is a bit harsh, but the “brightness” of the concrete will fade within a year. Having concrete posts also makes it much easier to replace a damaged fence panel as they just slide in and out between two posts and can be lifted out with ease (with 2 people) ALL posts need to be dug at least 2ft into the ground and cemented in with a bag of POSTMIX. Please remember that if you want a finished height of 6ft you will need an 8ft high post (2ft will be in the ground)

  2. Concrete post

What else can we add to strengthen your fence?

It is also advisable to add a gravel board (or kick board) along the bottom of each panel. Again, these come in either timber or concrete and come in 2 sizes, 6” high or 12” high. These gravel boards ensure that fence panels are not sitting directly onto the ground, soaking up moisture and shortening the life of the panel. A fence also looks great when fitted gravel boards.
